SMA Sunny Boy 5.0kW Single-Phase Solar Inverter SB5.0-1SP-US-41

The SMA Sunny Boy 5.0-US SB5.0-1SP-US-41 is a 5,000W single-phase string inverter designed for residential solar installations. Combining SMA’s proven inverter platform with ShadeFix optimization, three independent MPPTs, integrated communications, and advanced safety features, the Sunny Boy 5.0-US provides a streamlined solution for residential PV system design and installation.

SMA ShadeFix provides string-level shade management without requiring module-level power electronics for optimization. The inverter also supports SunSpec-certified rapid shutdown devices, providing a cost-effective approach to module-level shutdown while reducing overall component count.

Flexible Solar Array Design

The Sunny Boy 5.0-US supports up to 8,000W of PV power, allowing designers flexibility when sizing residential arrays around its 5,000W AC output. Its three independent MPPT trackers make it easier to accommodate arrays with different orientations or other varying operating conditions.

Each MPPT supports up to 10A maximum operating input current and 18A maximum short-circuit current. The inverter operates across a broad 100–550V MPPT voltage range, with a minimum DC voltage of 100V and 125V start voltage.

SMA ShadeFix Technology

SMA's proprietary ShadeFix technology provides string-level optimization designed to improve energy production when an array experiences partial shading. By integrating shade management into the inverter, SMA can reduce the number of additional components required compared with systems that rely on module-level optimization.

Rapid Shutdown & Built-In Safety

The Sunny Boy-US platform supports SunSpec-certified rapid shutdown technology using power-line communication over the array's DC wiring. SMA's Power+ rapid shutdown solution is designed to meet applicable UL 1741 and NEC 2014/2017 rapid shutdown requirements when configured with compatible equipment.

Additional integrated protection includes:

  • Arc-fault circuit interrupter (AFCI)
  • Ground-fault monitoring
  • Grid monitoring
  • AC short-circuit protection
  • DC reverse-polarity protection
  • All-pole sensitive residual-current monitoring
  • Integrated DC disconnect

Smart Monitoring & Easier Commissioning

Built-in WLAN and Ethernet connectivity simplify inverter setup and monitoring. SMA's Installation Assistant provides direct smartphone access to help reduce commissioning time in the field.

The inverter also includes SMA Smart Connected, SMA's proactive service solution integrated with Sunny Portal. The system can automatically detect certain errors and initiate SMA's repair and replacement process, helping installers reduce troubleshooting and service time.
